Looking back on the semester I realized I learned a lot about archetypes. Every time I watch a movie or read a book i automatically in my head pick out the archetype for each character with out thinking. I also told my mom all about archetypes and what they are. Its something interesting to know cause it never makes a movie or book dull anymore it gives you something to think about.
I really enjoyed Nakita Itzel project because for one I am a sucker for "The Phantom Of The Opera". Watching her present her project just made me want to watch the movie again in which I went on amazon the day after project presentations and I brought it. I finally received it and watched it last night. Her essay was great she pointed out all the key points of it and I like how she included about it originally being in book form. I like how she gave a brief summary of the three main characters also.

4.5 What exactly does Horoscope mean?
In astrology, a horoscope is a chart or diagram representing the positions of the Sun, Moon, planets, the astrological aspects, and sensitive angles at the time of an event, such as the moment of a person's birth. Coraline essay

Just about any story you read their is a hero somewhere in it. Whether its not a big thing of the story of the hero making its journey is the story. In “Coraline” a book by Neil Gaiman the main character Coraline is indeed a hero.” In a hero with a thousand faces”Joseph Campbell gives us the whole run down of a hero’s journey.
First we start off our hero’s journey with the ordinary world. In Coraline the first thing Gaiman does is give us a brief introduction to the characters in the book from Coraline’s perspective. Also in the next couple of chapters he brings us outside the flats, where Coraline and her neighbors live, where Coraline, an explorer, goes around exploring the land. She goes to the well where she was strictly told not to go and finds a cat which is great help to her later in the the book. However the coming of a rainy foggy day restricts Coraline of exploring outside and leaves her to just exploring the flats which leads her into a room, where her grandmother’s old furniture and such is kept, in which she finds a small door different from the other doors in the house. Asking her mother what the door leads to her mother just tells her nothing and proves it to her by opening the door and there just being a brick wall on the other side of it. One night while while Coraline is asleep she hears some noise outside her bedroom door. She follows the noise which leads her back to the room with her grandmother’s stuff then it disappears into the small door.
This leads to the next thing in our hero’s journey called “the call to adventure” She seems to just shrug it off. However the next day while Coraline is out exploring the crazy old man that lives upstairs tells her his mice have a message for her. He tells her the message is “Don’t go through the door.” and he asks Coraline if this means anything to her. She tells him it does not and they both seem to just carry on with what they are doing. This proves Campbell’s next step which is “refusal of the call.” The next step in Campbell’s hero’s journey is “meeting with the mentor.” Now usually a mentor would be with a younger person and an adult but however in the book I feel Coraline’s mentor would be the black cat she meets earlier in the book. The cat can only talk when he is on the other side/ the other world. Next we have “Crossing the first threshold.” this is were Coraline finally gets more curious about this door and goes back to it unlocking it and discovering the the brick wall has turned into a long black hallway. Being the explorer she is she goes through said door and finds on the other side a replica of her own flat. Everyone and everything is and looks exactly the same except for three differences. Her “other” parents and the neighbors have black shiny buttons for eyes. The two old ladies that live together are constantly performing for an audience of all dogs. Lastly the cat, like I mentioned before, can talk to Coraline now and tell her what is going on and help her out.
Next in our hero’s journey we have Coraline discovering that her “other” parents want to keep her and have been waiting for her. They make her some dinner and let her explore around. When Coraline returns from her exploring the other mother asks Coraline what she thinks and if she wants to stay. When Coraline rejects this the other mother gets mad but lets Coraline go back through the door to the real world. However when Coraline wakes up the next day she discovers that her parents are gone. This is where I say our hero’s journey officially begins. Finally the cat leads Coraline back to the door where she knows the other mother has trapped her real parents and she now understands she must fight to get her parents and her life back.
The mother is pleased to see Coraline come back. She sits and talks with her and offers Coraline what she is eating which happens to be beetles. Coraline rejects her offer and moves on about the other mother taking her parents. After some words are exchange the other mother gets disgusted with her attitude and locks Coraline behind a mirror. This is where Coraline meets three other kids that other mother also locked behind the mirror and forgot about them. They can't exactly share much information with her however. After a while the other mother finally comes and gets Coraline out of the mirror. They have another talk where Coraline decides to play a game with the other mother. If Coraline wins then the other mother has to let her parents go. If the other mother wins she gets whatever she wants.
The other mother agrees on the rules of the game and Coraline sets out on her journey to set free the souls of the kids she met in the mirror and her parents. Not knowing where to even start and the other mother not giving her any hints she just adventures around the house trying to figure out where she would hide them. However Coraline remembers the stone that the old lady gave her and she takes it out. While in her room she looks through it and everything turns black and white but something seems to glow. She looks to see a marble that is glowing and picks it up and puts it in her pocket. She hears one of the kids voices as a reassurance that she is on the right track.As Coraline continues to look for the remaining souls the other mother tricks her into going downstairs where the other father turns into this big monster and tries to eat Coraline but she escapes. Next she goes to the old ladies apartment and uses the stone once again where she now finds a glowing ring. On her adventure of finding the souls she sees a snow globe on the mantel piece that they do not have at home. She finally finds the last one upstairs in the weird man's apartment. It is one of the balls that the rats use to perform. However the rat holding the ball gets away from Coraline but the cat comes and catches the mouse giving Coraline the ball.
Lastly she goes to the other mother and shows her that she has all three of the children souls. She then tricks the mother saying that her parents are stuck in between the two doors. The other mother goes to unlock the door for Coraline when she does Coraline throws the cat at the other mother and while the cat is attacking her she grabs the snow globe and the key and runs to the door. The cat runs off following her through the door but when the other mother reaches in to grab Coraline her hand snaps off when Coraline finally gets the door shut with the help of the three children and her real parents that are now free.
The next day she finds her parents back to where everything left off before this whole adventure happened. However the other mothers hand that snaps off is trying to get the key from Coraline. After failed attempts Coraline finally gets an idea to get rid of the hand. She pretends to have a tea party with her dolls lining them around the well she was told not to go to. The next day she finds her parents back to where everything left off before this whole adventure happened. However the other mothers hand that snaps off is trying to get the key from Coraline. After failed attempts Coraline finally gets an idea to get rid of the hand. She pretends to have a tea party with her dolls lining them around the well she was told not to go to. While she is playing with her dolls she is watching the other mothers hand through the corner of her eye. Finally the other mother's hand leaps up to get the key only to fall into the well where Coraline locks the hand in.
